Week 1 Prompt: What are your thought on the vaccination/autism link? If you are a parent, did it make you do things differently with your child (no right or wrong answers here! This is not a debate forum). If you aren't a parent, if you were to have children would this new found research change how you would go about getting your child vaccinated?
Also, as always, what do you think of the book?
My answers:
I think that there needs to be a greater deal of research when it comes to the link between vaccinations and autism. I tried to get in touch with my dad to see how my sister was before she had her vaccinations, but no such luck this week... maybe next. My sister has Aspergers and is very high functioning. I guess I always wonder what would have happened if they knew more at that time. If I have kids I will be very careful when it comes to paying attention to when and what is going in my kids body. I am careful about what goes in my body now, but until there is further research and studies conducted, most people will trust the doctors completely. Doctors are not always out for the best interest of the patient. Some will prescribe certain drugs for kickbacks, and give the normal rounds of what other doctors have done in the past. It is just the easy thing to do.
As for the book it took me a few chapters to get used to the hopping around, but I am hooked on the book as of now. I don't know if Emma realizes how much Theo is neglected when she just tosses aside the Wii game, and then blanks on dinner after Jacob came home from Jess'. I think I know where things are headed already. We shall see if my theories are correct as of next week!

Your right Doctors don't always know what is right just like some mothers today but it needs to be looked into...even if the decision to get all the shots together was made at least the mom did the research and made a decision and didn't just assume someone else was right.
I want to see what happens with Emma too. I think that Theo might still be very resentful but I would like to see Emma at least recognize her problem.
I agree about not always relying on doctors. I am guilty of this, although I feel as though our ped. really does have my daughters best interest at heart. I also check with other parents about stuff to talk about at appts. Funny though, like I said on my post, I had never known about the autism/vaccine link. I don't know if maybe it wasn't stressed to me cause I have a girl or I just was never really exposed to it amongst the friends and family I have, but hearing your sister has it makes me rethink relying solely on my daughters doctor and what friends know or don't know. It would be really interesting to hear what your dad says about your sister before she was diagnosed. When was she diagnosed?
I think were all in agreement that the way Theo is being neglected is heartbreaking. Although, I do sympathize with Emma. My days are so random and spontaneous so it would be really hard to have to live so structured.

She did not get officially diagnosed until she was 25. The schools thought it was ADD with Learning Disabilities for the longest time, then they just said it was a social disorder. We went through probably 10 doctors and it took that many to get a diagnosis that made sense.
I would really like to hear what your dad thinks about it.
It's hard to know when to listen to a doctor and when not to. I just wish people knew what they were getting into and did it the right way. J and I really talked about what was best, we knew we wanted Lan to get the shots just not that quick....it's too many for such a little body.

From experience after all the Family Doctors I have talked to and all the Pedi's they won't ever say it comes from the vaccines. Drug companies would take a huge hit and that would fall back on the doctors too. Only one doctor I have talked to said he thought that the vaccines played a major part in causing autism. His child was autistic!
